Hope is both the earliest and the most indispensable virtue inherent in the state of being alive. If life is to be sustained hope must remain, even where confidence is wounded, trust impaired.

*All right... what I do is... I watch people.  Do you ever watch someone who doesn't know that you're watching 'em?   An old lady on the street corner, or some kids getting on a bus to school.  Well... they stand there and you look, and all of a sudden this flash comes over them, and you know it has nothing to do with anything external... because that hasn't changed.  They just suddenly become realer and more alive.

If you look at someone long enough, you can discover their humanity."

*When despair for the world grows in me, and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be -- I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.  I come into the peace of of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought or grief.  I come into the presence of still water and I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light.  For a time I rest in the grace of the world... and am free.*
